![]() Old-timers like pawn shops, dollar stores, and storefront churches still dominate Broadway's retail landscape, but organic supermarkets and artisanal coffee shops are creeping into the mix. Features include upscale rents ($2,350 for a two-bedroom), a brand new Blink next door, and those divisive Juliet balconies. Located steps from the train, as they say, the seven-story, 27-unit building at 1004 Gates Avenue started adding tenants recently. The Lexington Avenue block west of Broadway is now almost entirely new construction or "development sites for sale", all of which are designed for those seeking "trend setting style and enviable amenities" in their rental living arrangements. The buildings include more than 100 total units, with prices topping $3,200 a month, and amenities like a fitness center with "surround music,” a furnished roof deck, and gaming lounge. On Greene Avenue right off Broadway, on the Stuyvesant Heights side of things, two luxury rental properties rose this year across the street from each other. ![]() The People's Garden at Broadway and Greene Avenue in Bushwick was "permanently protected" in 1999 by the Trust For Public Land. Since 2012, the tropically-colored Living Gallery at 1094 Broadway has hosted events, classes, exhibitions of emerging artists, and pop-up shops at which locals can sell their wares. Guests can enjoy free bicycle rentals, an outdoor sundeck, and "locally-inspired art".Īt 1170 DeKalb Avenue, just a half block from the Red Lion, another boutique hotel is in the works, this one with approximately 125 rooms. Rooms start at $359 a night at the Red Lion, a boutique hotel which opened at 1080 Broadway in early 2017. A two-bedroom rental was recently listed for $2,850. The triangular 1000 Broadway, with 30 apartments on the Bed-Stuy side of Myrtle Avenue, features amenities like in-unit washer/dryers and balconies facing the elevated. So far the retail on Broadway remains largely unaffected by all the new development, with dollar stores, Chinese take-out joints, and hair salons still predominating, but even here the signs of change are unmistakable, most notably with the opening of a handful of those reliable harbingers of gentrification, the pricey coffee shop. ![]() It's unclear how much of the recent construction seen here was also sparked by the upcoming L train shutdown, but obviously the market value of Brooklyn housing, office space, and hotels located near actual, working subway lines is going to increase as we approach the L-pocalypse. ![]() (And it even got the inevitable horrible neighborhood name portmanteau- “Bedwick”-proving that change isn’t too far off.)Īnd this despite the downzoning of Bedford Stuyvesant North in 2012, which restricted the height of side street development to four stories unless affordable housing was thrown into the mix. That much of the avenue runs along the Bed-Stuy/Bushwick border, an area impoverished and neglected for decades, only adds to the unlikelihood that the corridor would be ripe for rapid development.Īnd yet a recent tour confirmed that all along Broadway between the Myrtle Avenue and Halsey Street stations, and on the blocks immediately adjacent to the commercial corridor, you'll now find a wealth of new, self-styled "luxury" buildings, hotels, and active construction sites, as well as empty lots and zombie sites that increasingly seem more like opportunities than blight. It's a physical presence that, like all such structures, can fairly be described as hulking, as it casts deep shadows and rains down clatter on the boulevard below. An elevated rail line carrying the J, Z, and M trains runs just about the entire length of Brooklyn's Broadway, from the Williamsburg Bridge to Broadway Junction.

Nevertheless, they would have interacted regularly with neighbors from diverse backgrounds since Bethany was located on an important trade route between Jericho and Jerusalem. Observing Jewish customs and practices would have made them distinct from other people groups living nearby. The family’s religious background would have played a significant role in how they socialized within their community as well. They likely had close relationships with other families in the area who were also involved in agriculture. ![]() Being farmers allowed them to be self-sufficient but also required them to work hard to make ends meet. Living with moderate means would have also impacted how the family interacted with others in their community. Despite not being among the elite members of society, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus’ family was one of respectability within their community. The sisters were able to host Jesus and his disciples in their home, suggesting that they had ample space and food to accommodate such guests. They had enough resources to provide for their family’s needs but were not wealthy. It is believed that the family owned an orchard and made a living through farming and selling their produce.īeing a moderately successful farming family allowed them to live comfortably within their means. They lived in Bethany, a small town outside of Jerusalem that was known for its olive groves. The Family’s Socioeconomic Status Living with Moderate MeansĪlthough the Bible doesn’t give us a detailed account of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus’ parents’ financial situation, we can gather some insights based on their lifestyle. Though we can’t say for certain how much influence their names had on Mary, Martha and Lazarus’ personalities, it’s interesting to see how the meanings behind their parents’ names could have shaped their upbringing and character. On the other hand, Eucharia is derived from Greek word “eucharistia” meaning thanksgiving or gratitude which suggests that she may have been a devout woman who practiced gratitude towards God for her blessings. It is also worth noting that Syro’s name has been associated with a Hebrew word that means “to turn aside” which could be interpreted as him turning away from traditional beliefs or customs. Interestingly enough, the meaning behind Syro’s name is “Lord” or “Master” which could suggest that he was a respected member of his community with a position of authority. The epic Klingon set includes Commander Kluge, as well as Maltz and Torg, and the main man himself: Captain Kirk and his trusty second in command, Mr Spock. Although this could become slightly annoying to some parents, this can quickly be forgiven for the sparks of imagination that begin to fly as their children find so much enjoyment out of the legendary villain ship. It is small details that elevate the Klingon from a realistic model to hours of fun, as it amalgamates the retro appearance with modern capabilities, including lights and original sounds. The adversity this program has been through over the last decade was never going to turn me away in fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons why I signed with KU. Want to know something else the naysayers didn’t get during my recruitment? They’re phenomenal people for that (and about a million other reasons). They didn’t want to put that extra weight on my shoulders, so they kept that opinion to themselves and let me choose my own path. Only recently did I learn that they were “silently praying” for me to stay home. But they didn’t push me here - nor anywhere else, for that matter. Don’t get me wrong: My parents are both diehard Jayhawk fans, so much so that the workout room in our home has framed copies of just about every Sports Illustrated issue that’s featured KU. Of course, the story of why I chose KU couldn’t be told without mentioning my mom and dad, Freda and Ryan - though maybe not for the reason you’d think. Like pretty much everybody else within the Lawrence city limits that night, we made our way down to Mass Street. I was only seven years old, but I remember how Mario’s shot got my parents out of their seats and running around the house. My introduction to that came on April 7, 2008, the date the KU men’s basketball team won the national title. The other thing you should know about Lawrence? The people who live here bleed crimson and blue. For someone who isn’t from here, seeing just how friendly the people are can be a bit of a culture shock, but in a good way. They’ll strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Through random acts of kindness, the folks who live here go the extra mile for complete strangers. Have you ever heard the term “Midwestern nice”? I’m here to tell you it’s real. If you’re skeptical on that last one, I invite you to just trust the process (shoutout to Pizza Shuttle - I wouldn’t know what to do without you).Įven more than its places, though, Lawrence is about its people. I love explaining to people - or better yet, showing them - how cream cheese and bacon can come together to create the perfect slice of pizza. ![]() I love devouring a plate of wings at Jefferson’s, but still leaving enough room for a scoop or two of cookies and cream ice cream from Sylas and Maddy’s. I love walking up and down Mass Street, something that can be worth your time even if you don’t end up buying anything. Here’s what they never understood: There’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right here, right now.įor me, Lawrence is more than just the city I’ve lived in my whole life. As they tried to talk me out of committing to KU, their message always sounded the same: “Why are you doing this? You have a chance to go somewhere else, somewhere that’s established. I still remember what the skeptics told me during my recruitment. We also visited a quaint local store museum that was chock full of curios and colorful local history. The lunch we ordered proved to be delectable and the restaurant itself felt very genuine. The 2 boat rides were quite different from one another and provided us with loads of opportunities to see wildlife close up and personally in different ecosystems. When he saw an animal or plant of interest, he would carefully pull over and point out distinguishing features. And it was! Zac used his driving time to tell us about the ecosystems of the Everglades. From the moment he handed out lists of Florida birds to check off as we encountered them, at the very beginning of our journey, we knew this was going to be a special day. Our guide, Zac, was infused with passion about what he was showing us. Our airboat is one of the most amazing airboat rides, even when we don't see many alligators but if they expectation is a thrill ride I can understand disappointment. The boys seemed to love the reptile presentation. I can imagine when a person is upset about one thing it can snowball. I sincerely appreciate that you apologized profusely to me. After calling me a liar and stating we never did the reptile show, I explained we do that after the airboat ride. This tour takes place in the headwaters of the Western Everglades and is part of the Everglades ecosystem and watershed. We do not claim that Captain Bob's Excellent Adventure is in the true Everglades. It was cool that morning and other guests confirmed they only saw 6 alligators. You were upset that the airboat captain refused to do 360 spins (which is not legal) and were upset that they focused so much attention on spotting birds. When you returned from the airboat ride you screamed obscenities at me in front of other guests with children and that is not acceptable. Although smoking is not permitted on the tour I let you gather your thoughts before the airboat ride. When we arrived at our destination you were clearly upset because you get car sick and you explained that smoking a cigarette calmed you down. Narrating the tour and spotting wildlife is my job. I apologize for not taking you seriously. When you asked if I was going to be talking the whole way and told me you were bored I thought you were kidding. I jokingly said that as a native Floridian I get cold when the temperature is below 70! I also seemed to upset you when I stopped to look at an endangered Crested Caracara on the drive to the airboat ride. It was 50 degrees out to start the day, so that's my standard response when I see guests wearing t-shirts and shorts. I always want to assure that everyone is dressed appropriately and I politely suggested that if you had extra layers to bring them for the airboat ride. I spent almost $300 for a miserable time where my family didn't even get to sit together on ANY of it and he thinks I would want to come back? I want my money back and advise that no one else wastes there's on this horrible tour that's basically on a lake.Īpparently we got off on the wrong foot to start the day. He gave me a $50 gift certificate and I felt like that was a slap in my face. I told the owner I felt like I was lied to because I was told we were not even in the everglades. They liked holding the snakes and alligator, but said that the airboat ride was boring. I had a 10 year old boy and a 13 year old boy with me and they were disappointed in all of it. The reptile show was like going to a pet store. They focus on only the birds and I love birds, but after stopping for the same ones every time I was over it. We saw one alligator and our captain didn't even stop. I felt like this airboat tour ruined me ever doing another airboat ride anywhere except Louisiana. All of that enormous bulk is borne by the water most of the time.Do not book this tour unless you realize that you are paying for a car ride more than anything else. Perhaps this is why the green anaconda can afford to be about 50 percent heavier than a python of the same length. Unlike the Burmese pythons, which are found on land and in trees as often as in the water, the green anaconda is an almost wholly aquatic snake. What’s more, the anaconda would be less likely to encounter fire ants in the first place. It can easily slither away from fire ant bites. Unlike its smaller relative, the anaconda gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The green anaconda does not have this problem. Given the ubiquity of fire ants in the Everglades, it’s imaginable that the ants are limiting the population growth of the pythons. By the end of the day she and her brood had been reduced to little more than scales and bones. One Burmese python at Trail Lakes, captured in the wild and kept in a large outdoor enclosure, was swarmed by fire ants that tunneled up from beneath her while she guarded her eggs. ![]() ![]() You can send the address of this page to your students, tutors, friends, etc. 4th grade worksheets are printable, allowing kids to practice together even when they are not connected to the internet.
